To all executive officers and engineering leaders:
The Internet is a tidal wave. It changes the rules. It is the most important single development to come along since the IBM PC was introduced in 1981.
In fact, the Internet is even more important than the original PC because it connects every computer on Earth into a single decentralized network of information and communication.
I want to make it clear that our commitment to the Internet is highest priority across all divisions of Microsoft. Every product line—from Windows to Office to developer tools—must integrate Internet capabilities.
The open protocols of the World Wide Web will transform every element of computing, communications, and commerce over the next decade.
Those who adapt to this shift will lead the next century of technology; those who ignore it will fade into irrelevance.
